GSG Mapping Emory's Sustainability Social Network project supported with $5,500 of funding.

Building on the SNA Fall 2014 pilot project that mapped Emory’s graduate student sustainability social network, a team of twelve student researchers is currently mapping Emory’s entire sustainability community, including undergraduates, faculty and staff. The focus is on individuals and groups that actively shape sustainability projects and initiatives on Emory's main and Oxford campuses. The project has been supported with grants two years running from the Emory Sustainability Incentives Fund ($1,800 in 2015 and almost $700 in 2016), $2,000 of funding from the Office of Sustainability Initiatives (OSI) and with a $1,000 Emory Dining grant that supports sustainability-focused events.

Led by GSG President Ioulia Fenton, the team collected data through surveys, interviews and online research during Spring 2015 and analyzed it over the summer. The team is spending Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters disseminating the results through Participatory Analysis and Community Engagement sessions, conference presentations at the national conference of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) in October 2015 and the regional Georgia Campus Sustainability Network (GCSN) conference in November 2015, and Emory media (see left panel for links to articles). The project has consolidated the data into an interactive Emory Sustainability Ecosystem map that aims to make it easier for individuals to connect to existing projects and see the big picture of sustainability work at Emory.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
